For those looking for The Waffle House on International Drive, Orlando, you
won't find it. That's because the Black Angus Steakhouse runs as "The Waffle
House" in the morning and as the "Black Angus Steakhouse" for the remainder of
the day.
Whilst in America, we wanted to sample the delights it has to offer - that included waffles and pancakes for breakfast. Where better than The Waffle House for breakfast then? Well, at least that's what we thought at the time.
The concept is relatively simple. It's an all you can eat breakfast buffet served with some poor quality coffee (optional extra). We did the rounds twice. The first time we did the normal things but couldn't find waffles.
The second time around, we checked for the waffles and definitely couldn't find them.
It turns out that waffles aren't served as part of the breakfast buffet at The Waffle House. For an extra $1.50 per person (plus tax), you can add them to your breakfast. This seemed daft to us as we would expect a standard waffle to be available as part of a breakfast buffet at somewhere that calls itself "The Waffle House". It's like going into a shoe shop only to find they don't stock shoes.
The restaurant was very darkly lit which is takes a bit of getting used to on a bright sunny morning in Florida. As far as we could tell, it looked nice and clean.
Maths didn't seem to be a strong point when we paid the check.
We had seen a price in a discount voucher magazine ($3.89) for the breakfast buffet. There was a voucher but that was for a 15% discount in the advert but the terms of this were that it could not be used against the breakfast buffet. I read that to mean that the breakfast buffet is $3.89 (excluding tax) and if I ordered any menu items (we never once saw a menu), we could get 15% off the bill.
We were charged $5.99 a head for the breakfast buffet, excluding tax.
After querying it, I was told that I should have presented the advert before asking for the check, even though the advert didn't say so.
We did get it for the discounted price but the funny thing was that the billboard outside the restaurant quoted a price of around $4 - completely different to the prices already banded around.
No. Had we have had waffles and none of the pricing problems, we would still not go back as the food was only average. We experienced much better buffet food elsewhere during the trip although we never did have waffles....
